Independent Research Project

Intellectual Property Law

Summer of 2017

Why an Independent Study?

Why Intellectual Property Law?

After taking a course on Negotiations and Advocacy. Having been exposed to criminal law in an academic setting, I sought to explore other aspects of the field and decided to pursue an internship with Connecticut Legal Services, a poverty law firm.  It was at this time that I realized I wanted to widen my understanding of the law even further, beyond the criminal and social law. As such, I decided to conduct an independent research study. My independent study analyzed the relationship between Intellectual Property, government institutions, and large business corporations.

Research Question

How do America's intellectual property laws impact the United States’ Criminal Justice System?  - specifically analyzing two companies with IP protection for their programs [TrueAllele/COMPAS]

Thesis

Although intellectual property laws are an important form of legal protection, these laws have the ability to infringe on the civil liberties of American citizens.
